I have published two of my university research projects to .
These research ideas are my own, and are deeply interlinked.
Methods of combatting desertification + analysis of China's recent successes
Reasons are obvious.
Hypotheses: Soil is much more than just "dirt", it is a communist hyper-organism. Desertification is probably driven in part by the loss of soil & soil replenishment. Combatting deserts & desertification requires a multi-pronged approach, probably including: preventing movement of earth; introducing soils; introducing mycelium; decreasing water drainage & evaporation; increasing water capacity & surface humidifiers (plants, perhaps bioengineered); bringing water from afar; tapping aquifers; and more.
Pushing back deserts
Albeit similar to the topic of "combatting desertification", pushing back existing deserts may be harder and somewhat different. We have to understand how deserts form, move, spread and shrink, and how they interact with weather systems and water bodies. It's also necessary to explore & discuss (in this paper, or another) the importance of deserts, biomes which may exist within them, whether it is right to remove them, and the dangers of both destroying deserts and allowing them to exist.

Sound field structure
Sound fields of real objects and speaker output
Multi-source sound field effects on local phenomena
See how sound fields may encourage & discourage cellular growth, chemistry, particle accretion, etc.. Specifically regarding the local physical properties of different regions within the sound field. (Not regarding the simplistic idea of "playing music to make plants grow".)
Applications of sound field effects in tech & environment
ideas include:
increasing humidity / retaining moisture
How sound (volume, type, regularity, frequency) plays a role in local ecosystems
Maximum known temperature limits for plants and stretching the limits
Bioengineering plants for heat resilience — which genes are responsible, what are the other limiting factors, what's the highest temp we could engineer, ramifications of release into the wild
Because: future climates may be harsher
Maximum water absorption / retention of plants, and stretching the limits
Bioengineering plants for water capacity — genes, factors, engineerability, ramifications, etc.
Because: future climates.
Plants may also be able to collect & purify water from distal sources and the air, for humans/animals to tap (see water emission mechanisms research project).
Water emission mechanisms of plants, maximum rate, controllability
Bioengineering plants for water emission.
Because: plants which emit water easily could be fed water from a distant source and then used for increasing & maintaining humidity in an arid zone. And: drying plants and wetting plants could be used in tandem for purifying the air & moisture.
Gas absorption mechanisms of plants, types of gases & particulates, controllability. (Consider adsorption too.)
Bioengineering plants for purifying the air (and maybe also liquid bodies), with a focus on also benefitting the plant and not just abusing its functionality. Can the plants' own processes also convert the uptaken molecules into something useful for themselves? Can they output the molecules like excretion? Can they secrete it as fuel, or even food? (Many pollutant molecules are made of the same or similar atoms and structures as are in foods, medicines, vitamins.)
Every research project takes a large amount of planning even before the research starts. Below is a range of phases & statuses that a research project will pass through.
These research ideas are from friends. They are outside of my range of expertise, but are interesting & important nonetheless. If anyone feels enticed to undertake these projects, feel free to take the ideas, or get in touch if you want some help in planning the project!
Some are quite small projects, such as comparing graphs of datasets, while some are much larger and may require a data analysis or even original experimentation.
Essential oils safety
One friend runs a small, independent candle production workshop.
He uses essential oils for aromatherapeutic purposes.
He has read a lot of scientific research articles regarding the safety of essential oils and other fragrance oils, but does not feel satisfied with his findings.

Probiotics for health benefits
"the verifiable data on consumption of probiotics for physiological health benefits (digestion, gut, immunity etc.)"
Obesity rates vs corporate retail vs GDP
